Buying a jump rope is a crucial step towards owning those pesky double unders. Yes, we have some ropes at the gym, but there are advantages towards buying your own:
1) You can customize the length and weight of your rope. Both length and weight play a huge role in double unders. Obviously you don’t want a rope that’s too long or too short but you also want one that’s a good weight for you. A lot of beginners prefer a rope with some weight to it. This gives them a better “feel” for when the rope is passing over and helps with timing your double unders. Once you’ve developed the timing you can then trade out to a thinner faster rope.
2) Accessibility. If you own a rope you can practice anywhere, anytime. More practice, better results.
3) Options. There are tons of different ropes out there. Different length and weighted handles. Different designs to help with the spin of the rope. You should ask people at the gym who already own a rope if you can try theirs to get an idea of what’s out there and what you prefer. Something as simple as a longer handle or shorter handle can make a big difference.
